Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. It is located on the eastern end of Long Island. On the south fork in Southampton. Great Peconic Bay is to the north. Shinnecock Bay is to the south. To the east, the Atlantic Ocean. It's usually breezy here, often windy. Short, stiff grass covers the rolling sandhills. It is easy to see why this great old golf course often is referred to as the best British Open track in America. The original 12-hole layout was constructed in 1891 with the help of the Shinnecock Indians, who lived in the area since the 15th century. Incorporated in 1891, it is considered by most to be the first golf club in the U.S. The U.S. Open has been played here three times, in 1896, 1986 and 1995. You're looking up the third fairway, a 453-yard par-4. The wind is at your back this morning. An elevated, heavily undulated green awaits. Go for it.
